This Fall we're back in the mix with a new podcast, and mock documentary at Supercuts. Also, new websites, one serious: www.exploremusic.com - find some new tracks to listen to, and one goofy: www.angrytoiletpaperguy.com - make him mad I dare ya.  Pumped for the Qtip record next month too. Get up.

Update: Madlib had the sample first - Understanding  from Vol. 1 - 2 Movie Scenes

"While exploring a small and distant universe, scientist/inventor/superbrain-extraordinaire, Dr. LeDoux stumbled upon a tiny little planet. Once a peaceful paradise, it had since become very overcrowded. Due to the lack of space, the critters that lived there had become hostile towards their neighbors. To end their quarrelling, Dr. LeDoux immediately took up residence in the haunted house at the top of the hill and began his work to find a solution.

Days later, he emerged from his laboratory with The Critter Splitter — his greatest invention ever! The Critter Splitter could painlessly split the critters into sections so they could exchange parts of themselves with their neighbors. By doing this, they were able to see how the other critter was feeling. They soon realized that EVERYBODY was frustrated at the lack of space. The quicker they got along, the more enjoyable their lives became. Within no time, the planet was once again a beautiful paradise brimming with wonderfully happy critters."

Can we as humans learn something from this sweet little story? You're gosh darn right we can. Barack Obama needs to get in touch with the Doc.

I'm off to Vancouver for a good friends wedding and holiday. In the meantime, my Toronto Life article just made the web: check it out! What do you think, are people polite in T.O?

9 Jun 08

"You better finish that sandwich buddy boy!!"

Quoted from #10 in our 4th series from the article I just penned for Toronto Life Magazine. More here later, for now pick up the July issue. Thanks Courtney!

Just getting around to posting about a very cool art exhibit I saw about 3 weeks ago. BGL had a show at Diaz Contemporary that I was fortunate enough to check out with some friends; even got to go on a guided tour (thanks Smart fam!) This smoking water fountain (left) welcomed you to the exhibit that featured a dead Vader, studded watch dog, medieval sword that needed watering, and a massive framed photograph which every 5 minutes or so fell off the wall, before remounting itself. The Art Club were suitably impressed. This is art that jumps out at you. Look for a full recap of the exhibit and info on The Art Club soon on lowsound.ca - we also saw some unreal tribal art stuff previously (shrunken heads, mummies) that I want to get all together on here as well.

But...it's the holidays and I'm off to Mexico for a couple weeks so this will probably be the last post of the year. So in the interest of catching up, want to bring you up to date on some stuff I've been into lately:

  • Listening to versions of 'People make the world go round' as recorded by both Milt Jackson and Freddie Hubbard. The Milt version is smooth, and the drop at the top is crazy as Milt's keys offset the trumpet which ironically is played by Hubbard. Hubbard rocks the trumpet through the whole album actually (Sunflower, CTI 1972.) The version on Hubbard's record (Polar AC, CTI 1975) is more full sounding, more orchestral, and has Hubert Laws flute playing where Milt's keys were on the Sunflower jam. Quite awesome listening to different versions of this classic by the Stylistics, and how depending on who's name is on the cover of the record, how the same song gets reinvented.
  • In the Key of Charles - The new CBC Radio 2 show Sunday mornings at 10:00am. Gregory Charles has a wonderful way of presenting music that suits a lazy Sunday morning with the paper. Intelligent stuff, and a refreshing break from a lot of CBC radio that sounds way too scripted.
  • Burial. Untrue. New album from the mysterious UK dubstepper. Listen to what the press are saying about this one. Essential for headphone listening during the cold nights of winter. Shell of Light and Etched Headplate are standouts.
  • http://gapingvoid.com/ - I just want to link here. This site rocks, Hugh's the man.
  • Mike's Urban Spa - 'where we supply the cucumbers'
Our first advertiser is coming aboard, and we're thrilled! Look for some great creative soon and help spread the word about the newest spa in Toronto affectionately known as Mike's Urban!

And finally, see below for a link to Wainy Days. Season 2 has just started up. Happy Christmastiminess, and best to you and yours. See you on flip in '08.

And if you the think the new interest in Art is an excuse to hit on gallery hotties, and go to chi chi openings - you're close... you're forgetting about the cheese plates.

"Where are you from, originally?"

Hey internets, Fall's here and we're happy to announce that Lowsound Productions has completed work on the Corus Voicebank. The site is on lockdown because it's for internal use only, but if you're interested in seeing screen shots and discussing how Lowsound can build something like this for you, fire us an email.

The site is hot, and we're pumped for the official launch!

Side note - Boom Box Baby has unfortunately been shutdown, and the Awesome Minute is on hiatus. Holler at us if you want to put the AM's on your site, we're shopping it around. Here is Awesome Minute #5 on Sunscreen as a refresher for ya:

We're coming up on 2 years here at Lowsound which is pretty wild! Back in November 2005, I wrote about a show called Stella which I recommended looking for. The Comedy Network picked it up here for a while but it aired at weird times. Anyway, a couple of the guys who wrote and created the series now have internet TV shows that I've been watching. Really funny stuff, check 'em out.

Human. Together. Human. Together. Daft flipped it for the Toronto show. The lights were amazing, the encore - yup!

08 July 07

"Hey, I'm way more talented than a dolphin"

More AM's coming soon.

Ever wonder what Batman would say if he had lower back pain?

27 May 07

"Awesome my brother!"

That's a Guilty Simpson quote below on the April update, verse is bonkers on Black Milk's Sound the Alarm. Drums Clappin' like the way Dilla did it. What up peoples, the Hiatus has been hiated. Dilla's fave saying Turn it up is the same as the Boom Box Baby motto, and you'll hear the BBB announcers saying Turn it up just like Dilla dawg!

We're laying some things down on Boom Box Baby, one of which is a weekly feature called the Awesome Minute.
Check it out!

It's hard to write about without smiling;) - but you'll dig, your boy Brian Crosmeister (new site) hosts, and we talk about stuff that's awesome. There's Biggie and M.I.A. samples naturally, and a new one every week on www.boomboxbaby.ca; we'll be posting them here as well. You should scope out BBB - it's an online radio station for teens, of which there's about 1 in the world. Shouts out to the crew!!!

11:19pm - I notice the word Dilla in the podcast section of my Itunes. What? Diplo's podcast #15 is all Dilla. Where did this come from? I love podcasts! It's bangin' - DJ Soul's done a mix and found the Steve Spacek dollar sample. "Circulate, percolate". There really is nothing like this. Thank you Diplo and DJ Soul!

Quick mention about the Stars Remix album, so far so good. Amy's voice sounds nice over the bleep bleep.

A new Mouth 2 Mouth episode is live, could be the last one.

And there's some cool graffiti on Dundas right now, "Trust your nervous system". Haha.

01 April 07

"Too live for TV, too real for radio... " Happy April Fools to all the fools and non-fools, we're with Erasmus in our praise of folly.

Look out for a new feature on Lowsound called the Awesome Minute. B-reazy is on the collab and look for AM's on slimy pond creatures, public speaking, and skull tattoos. Spring!

08 Feb 2007

"Hop in the Chevy 'lil mama I'mma take you to the hideaway." RIP to Disco D, another Detroit soldier falls. He was your guy for ghettotech, and was a wicked hip hop producer who did beats for 50 Cent and Lil Scrap. Rough.

2 days 'till the 1 year anniversary of Dilla's passing, the re-release of Ruff Draft is dropping on Stones Throw in March. Play some Jay Dee this week.

Concert news! Redeye are touring and are probably coming to a city near you. 27 dates in 1 month, mostly East Coast as they load up the tour bus with road band jam cats, G Love and Special Sauce. I know how pumped Mike is for this, congrats bro. For more Redeye, check out our interviews section. We spoke with Mike about their new record back in November.

New Content Alert, Overdue Content Alert: we talk to Vice films head honcho Eddy Moretti about the Travel DVD and the new online TV network (launched this week.) Also, their new issue is the Girls issue I believe. Eddy, page 22, see the girl with the ankle straps? I think I've got a shot, please confirm. (See if she likes hideaways?)

15 Jan 2007

It's the New Year, hello '07. Whatup! Those Double D's are getting closer. Looking forward to throwing some D's on those D's.

Ain't a damn thang changed, Low will keep bringing you that full metal jacket double pump shotgun funk. Less Radio stuff, more photovisual and music stuff I think. But we are working on some internet stream projects so will probably carry some of that over.

More Mouth 2 Mouth Episodes are going up soon, and the ever delayed Behind the Scenes at Vice Films audio footage, double and the RESFEST 06 doc. But, we are presenting something new right now. And this has been a long time coming - Sakartvelo. All my thanks to JC for putting this together and making it available here on Lowsound. We are very happy to have it.

This is not the Europe you know, and no this is not some BS trip to Thailand. And Costa is dead now too. Few places exist in the world to live and travel and experience culture through fresh eyes and native spirit, but Georgia is one of those places I'm told. Lowsound is proud to present our newest photo exhibit:
Sakartvelo: The Georgia of the Caucasus.

"Chillin' with my yesterday friend sets..." Madlib's right, this week we move West for the holidays, best of the season to you!

Madlib's Mind Fusion 4 is tough to find but worth it for the fuzzy homemade remixes featuring Nas, Raekwon, and Quas of course.

With this mix-tape album of quick cut interludes and sample stretching, the Loop Digga lets us know how true to it he really is. And there's a Mind Fusion 5 too, hey, be like Madlib and don't sleep, go get this.

The Madlib thread goes right back to the beginning of Lowsound actually, it's how we started, but we do occupy our minds with other pursuits here at LS: The Fountain is a great look at the theatre, Nigella - we love you, and the Six Feet Under finale had us shook a little...we're not going to front, we'll play the Clipse's album straight through at max volume and then get down to some Six Feet. Can't front, won't front, and we're not going to stop using the word front either.

On the make currently is the RESFEST06 Doc, be on the lookout for that. One of the highlights, it has to be said, was an animated Nike Commercial with music by Kardinal. We'll bring you in on it. Also, spoke with Eddie Moretti at Vice about their travel DVD, as well as the directors of the Cali music festival epic Rock the Bells. That flick was flicktacular (go ahead, I'm in a giving mood.)

Finally, you will learn about Sakartvelo from the inside with Lowsound's next guest photography exhibit. Remember the eastside, it's coming soon!

We'll see you on the flipside, no not the afterlife, just 2007. Have a safe and happy holiday, and don't forget to be there for it.

1 Nov 2006

Hello friends, Lowsound is 1 year old, pretty amazing. Scroll down and you'll see that on Oct 18, we launched the site with an interview with Madlib from the backseat of a taxicab. And it's been a whirlwind since, want to say to thanks to all our visitors - I don't know who you are, but I'm glad you keep coming back.

It's Fall and you can feel it here in T.O., the leaves are falling, the darkness is seeping, it's a time for warmth, and comfort and trust. We're looking forward to the holidays, we're sure you are too.

But until then, we're gonna bang it out and keep bringing you the Brit momchef goods you can only find on lowsound.ca. Lots of new stuff is live:

Also, want to let you know that our radio show, The First Word, has a blog now too. Sundays at 1:00p is when we roll.

It's Fall, sweep low with us. Peace.

2 Sept 2006

New! Mouth 2 Mouth is an improv comedy show that we're now featuring on lowsound. Host Dan Winkler is a controversial talk radio host who challenges his guests on hilarious moral dilemnas. Talk radio isn't supposed to be like this, and that's why we like it so much. It's time to share some spittle folks!

And Lowspace #3 is up, it's not that good though;)

21 Aug 2006

I bounce 'em around. So because this is a magazine, then I think we have a new issue, and this is the Editor's note. I'd get a picture taken like those smarmy GQ bozos in their day old suits, but my suit is getting pressed for a charity gala this Sunday, and our photographer is in Colima scouting hotties for the next American Apparel campaign. Maybe next time...

Dig the Fall line, check radio and interviews for features on friends, being a kid, and celebrity obsession.

A shout to all our friends - hey, act like a kid this month, obsess over someone, or something, eat a peach!

10 Aug 2006
